About

In 2011, Dan Slater opened the Water Shed after seeing the need for a specialised sailing shop on the North Shore. The store is not just a sailing chandlery but a water sports lifestyle shop that specialises in kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards, as well as a huge range of water sport clothing.

Dan Slater has been involved in competitive sailing since the age of nine when he first started at Takapuna Boating Club in Bayswater.

In 1991, at the age of 14, he became the youngest sailor to win both the Starling National Fleet Racing Championships and the National Match Racing Championships.

In 1992, Dan won a silver medal in Portugal at the World Young Championships and followed that up in 1994, becoming World Champion. This was in the Laser Std Class.

Dan has represented New Zealand at three Olympics. In 2000 at Sydney in the 49er Class and in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London in the Finn Class.

Dan also continues his involvement in competitive sailing by coaching. In 2014, he coached the Dutch sailor Nicholas Heiner winning the World Laser Championships in Santander Spain.

To quote Dan, “Sailing is my life; it involves almost every moment of my day and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
